This new website aims to inform affiliated associations and to this end it is appropriate to start with good news.

Upon advice of a projected but unexpected rise in the Bookmakers’ voluntary levy from greyhound betting turnover, the Chairman’s Select Committee submitted a claim of £1m. to be allocated to prize money. There was competing claims from other stakeholders in receipt of central funding but after protracted negotiations and cogent argument the “powers that be” approved a grant of £1m. to be distributed between October 2011 and December 2012. This works out at approximately £40,000 per track.

Means of distribution then had to be decided and with the co-operation of the Promoters’ Association and GBGB it was thought that maximum publicity for the initiative by the distributor, British Greyhound Racing Fund would be achieved by promoting BGRF graded sweepstakes at the rate of roughly two per month per track, for as wide a range of grades as possible.

Normal prize money would be paid for heats but the finals would carry a first prize of £500 with the equivalent of £100 to also-rans, £100 to the winning trainer, and a trophy and presentation jacket to winning owner. No track money will be payable for the final but its value will be carried forward to be used as graded bonus money at a later date.

With the experience of auditing the use of carried forward funds in relation to the old Open Race BGRF funding, the Federation asked for comprehensive conditions to be adopted in relation to this new competition and these have been published and distributed to all track managements. Local associations are urged to be familiar with the rules and conditions of these competitions and if they have any problems, we are here to help and advice.

An additional sweetener has been the announcement of £5,000 BGRF Christmas Bonus prize money both for 2011 and 2012. The Federation now have nearly all licensed tracks as members and is the only voice for owners at the highest level.
